Could the announcement of a new Super Smash Bros. game be on the way?

Nintendo announced this Friday through its official X account that it will broadcast a Nintendo Direct lasting approximately 45 minutes on Wednesday, September 9th. It will begin at 4:00 PM (Spanish time) and can be watched through Nintendo's official YouTube channel.

The day before, on Tuesday, September 8th at 4:00 PM, the Japanese company will also broadcast a Nintendo Direct dedicated to The Legend of Zelda franchise to celebrate the series' 40th anniversary. The presentation will likely reveal many details about the remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, which is expected to arrive on Nintendo Switch 2 later this year.

Could a new Super Smash Bros. announcement be imminent?

Obviously, we still have no concrete evidence that a new game in the Smash Bros. franchise is about to be announced. However, there are at least some signs pointing in that direction.

First of all, the vast majority of Nintendo's major franchises already have a game released or currently in development for Nintendo Switch 2. Following the release of the The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, Nintendo will seemingly have no major console-selling title on the horizon.

Franchises such as Donkey Kong, Mario Kart, Pokémon, and Kirby already have games released exclusively for Nintendo Switch 2, while Fire Emblem: Fortune's Weave will arrive in stores on September 17th.

Nintendo also announced Xenoblade Origins during its July Direct, with a planned release in 2027. In addition, franchises such as Animal Crossing, Xenoblade, Mario Kart, The Legend of Zelda, and Mario have received special updated versions for Nintendo Switch 2.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is one of the few major Nintendo games that has not received any kind of improvement for Nintendo Switch 2, which could be a clue that the Japanese company has plans related to Smash that it may reveal during next Wednesday's Direct.

Whatever happens, we should mark the date on our calendars: on Wednesday, September 9th, we'll finally get our answers.

After all, it's hard to imagine that Nintendo doesn't have a major announcement planned for 2027, and Super Smash Bros. could potentially be the Japanese company's big release for next year.
